The signer can't open the link

Expired, used, replaced, not their turn, access code or one-time code: what each page means and how the sender fixes it.

Match the page the signer sees to the list below. Most of these are working as designed, and each has a short fix on the sender's side.

What you see

  • This envelope has expired — "The signing window has closed. Ask the sender to send a fresh copy."
  • This signing link has been used — usually with "…was not completed — it expired before everyone signed. There is no signed copy." or "Your signed copy was emailed to…".
  • This signing link is no longer valid — "The link may have been replaced with a newer one, or the sender may have cancelled the request."
  • Not your turn yet — "This envelope has a signing order — you'll be able to sign after earlier signers finish. Keep this link and try again later."
  • This document is protected — "the sender set an access code for you", then Wrong code — check with the sender and try again.
  • Confirm it's you — a 6-digit one-time code, with errors such as Too many codes have been sent. Ask the sender to send the envelope again.
  • Waiting for an answer — "You asked for someone's input before signing."
  • Nothing to do here — "You already signed this document." or "You declined this document."

Why

A signing link is personal and short-lived. It stops working when the person signs or declines, when the envelope completes, is voided or expires, and whenever a newer link is issued for the same person. Each reminder, Signing links click or correction issues a newer link, so only the latest email works.

The sender can also add gates: an access code, a one-time code, a signing order. Those are checked in each browser session, so a link opened on another device asks again.

Fix it

Expired

  1. Create a new envelope with the same document, either by uploading it again or from a template, and send it. The old links were retired when the envelope expired, so a fresh envelope is the clean route.
  2. Set Expires after on the prepare screen to give the signer enough time. Admins can change the account default under Admin → Signing defaults.
  1. If the page says the envelope is complete, the signer clicks Email me a fresh link. The new link to their sealed copy works for 30 days and goes to the address on file (shown partly hidden). They can ask again after ten minutes.
  2. If it says the envelope was declined, withdrawn or expired, there is no signed copy. Send a new envelope.

No longer valid

  1. Ask the signer to use the newest email they received.
  2. If they cannot find it, click Remind pending signers. The new email replaces every earlier link.

Not your turn yet

  1. Look at the recipient list. Signers go in routing order, and a delay such as +2d holds a turn back.
  2. If an earlier signer is stuck, remind them or correct their address with Correct details (under More). SignSpry emails each signer when their turn comes.

Protected by an access code

  1. Share the code by a different channel from the email. SignSpry keeps only a scrambled copy, so it cannot show it to you again.
  2. Five wrong tries end the attempts, and the page then reads Nothing to do here. Click Remind pending signers or Signing links: a new link resets the count.
  3. If the code is lost, void the envelope and send a new one with a new code.

Confirm it's you

  1. A code lives 10 minutes and allows 5 tries. A new one can be requested after 60 seconds, up to 5 codes in all.
  2. Where the sender chose WhatsApp or SMS and that channel cannot be used (switched off, number opted out, or an Indian number without SMS registration), the code comes by email. Check spam.
  3. After 5 codes the signer is locked. The sender needs to void the envelope and send a new copy.

Waiting for an answer

  1. The signer asked someone to approve or sign first. They click Withdraw request to sign straight away.
  1. A signer can click Assign to someone else when the sender allows it and no access code is set.
  2. Otherwise correct the recipient with Correct details (under More). The old link dies and the right person is emailed.
